World Lion Day - August 10th

An Asiatic lion yawning in warm evening light

World Lion Day is observed globally on August 10 every year to raise awareness about the conservation of lions and highlight the plight faced by them.

Why do we need to save lions?

Conserving lions is crucial for the following reasons:

  • Biodiversity: Lions help maintain a balanced ecosystem by regulating herbivore populations, contributing to the preservation of biodiversity.
  • Ecosystem Balance: As apex predators, lions influence the entire food web, preventing overgrazing and promoting a healthy ecosystem.
  • Trophic Cascade: Their presence affects vegetation, prey species, and other predators, creating cascading effects on the ecosystem's structure and function.
  • Ecotourism and Economy: Lions attract tourists, generating revenue for conservation efforts and supporting local communities.
  • Cultural and Symbolic Value: Lions hold cultural significance and are symbols of strength and courage, inspiring people to protect nature.
  • Global Impact: Lions are part of a complex web of life, and their conservation contributes to the overall health of our planet's ecosystems.

Overall, conserving lions is essential for maintaining ecological balance, supporting local communities, and preserving the rich biodiversity of our natural world.

  • The Asiatic lion (Panthera leo (opens in a new tab) persica) that today survives in the wild only in India (opens in a new tab). Since the turn of the 20th century, its range has been restricted to Gir National Park (opens in a new tab) and the surrounding areas in the Indian state of Gujarat (opens in a new tab). Historically, it inhabited much of the Middle East (opens in a new tab) to northern India.
  • In Saurashtra (opens in a new tab)'s Gir Forest rich in diverse flora and fauna, an area of 1,412.1 km2 (545.2 sq mi) was declared as a sanctuary for Asiatic lion conservation in 1965. This sanctuary and the surrounding areas are the only habitats (opens in a new tab) supporting the Asiatic lion. In May 2020, the state government had estimated the lion population at 674, a 29% increase over 2015's figure of 523.
  • Wildlife photography has the power to evoke emotions, tell stories, and create connections between people and these incredible animals. By showcasing the beauty, behaviour, challenges, and successes related to lions, photographers can play a pivotal role in advocating for their conservation and preserving the ecosystems they inhabit. Hence this is my small attempt to share stories of Asiatic Lions to the World and bring more focus to their existence and importance.
